A year has passed since the devastating wildfires of 2023 that swept through Maui, leaving a landscape scarred by flames and our lāhui forever changed.
The wildfires took a tragic human toll, claiming 102 lives and leaving many others injured. Thousands were evacuated, and many found themselves displaced. Reflecting on this catastrophic event is not just about recalling the destruction but also acknowledging the resilience, unity, and hope that emerged in the aftermath.
In the face of such adversity, the community response was nothing short of heroic.
Emergency services, firefighters, and volunteers from across Hawaiʻi and beyond mobilized swiftly to combat the blaze and provide support to those affected. Shelters were established, donations poured in, and countless acts of kindness and solidarity were witnessed. The spirit of aloha, characterized by love, compassion, and mutual support, was vividly on display as neighbors helped neighbors rebuild and community leaders organized efforts to ensure no one was left behind. This collective resilience became a beacon of hope amidst the devastation.
The past year has been marked by significant restoration and rebuilding efforts. Reforestation projects have been initiated to restore the damaged landscapes, focusing on planting native species to revive the local ecosystem. Community-driven initiatives have been instrumental in these efforts, with volunteers dedicating their time and resources to heal the land.
Rebuilding homes and infrastructure has been a monumental task, but progress is evident. To date, around 24 permits have been issued for rebuilding efforts, with more expected. Local government and nonprofit organizations have worked tirelessly to secure funding and provide resources for reconstruction.
While scars are still visible, the gradual restoration of homes and businesses has brought a sense of normalcy back to the island. As of July, the final 62 families were in the process of moving from temporary housing to more permanent homes.
The first anniversary of the wildfires is a solemn occasion, but it is also an opportunity to honor the memory of those who were lost and to celebrate the incredible resilience of the survivors.
Through the combined efforts of the community, a week of remembrance called Kuhinia Maui has been organized. Commemorative events are planned across the island, including a 1-year memorial service, a paddle out, and “Puana Aloha no Lahaina” (A Concert for Lahaina) at the Lahaina Civic Center Gymnasium. In May 2024, OHA distributed Kanaaho Grants for disaster aid and wildfire relief needs to 40 families, totaling almost $300,000. This is part of OHA’s broader commitment to Maui relief efforts, which also includes ongoing support through their website application link: www.oha.org/kanaahogrant for anyone needing disaster aid and emergency support.
Beyond the Kanaaho Grants, OHA has been actively involved in multiple initiatives to support the community including: partnering with the Maui Native Hawaiian Chamber of Commerce to launch a survey assessing the impact of the wildfires on Native Hawaiian businesses to secure further relief resources; opening a Maui Relief Storage Facility to organize and distribute donations; and partnering in raising $100,000 through the Wiwoʻole Maui Benefit Concert. Additionally, OHA distributed over $2 million in housing vouchers and gift cards in collaboration with the Global Empowerment Mission (GEM) and offered loan deferrals and disaster relief loans to affected individuals.
These comprehensive efforts reflect OHA’s dedication to addressing both immediate needs and long-term recovery. As Maui continues to heal and rebuild, the legacy of hope, unity, and resilience forged in the aftermath of the wildfires will undoubtedly inspire future generations.
The enduring strength of Maui’s community serves as a powerful reminder that even in the face of overwhelming adversity, we can emerge stronger and more united than ever.
