Notice of Consultation: Section 106 Of The National Historic Preservation Act of 1966 as Amended (2006)
The Hawaiʻi Department of Transportation (HDOT) is considering the initiation of a Kapālama Bridge Rehabilitation project with funding through the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA). This project is considered a federal action and undertaking, as defined by title 36 Code of Federal Regulations (CFR), Part §800.16(y) and Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA) of 1966, as amended (2006).
The Kapālama Canal Bridge is located on Nimitz Highway at mile post 4.800 and spans the Kapālama Canal. The proposed project site includes the existing right-of-way of the Nimitz Highway eastbound lane. Work would include repairing delamination and spalls along the concrete deck, concrete pier caps, columns, abutments, and bridge railings, and other related improvements. There will be no ground disturbing activities.
Pursuant to Section 106 of the NHPA, Native Hawaiian Organizations/Descendants with ancestral, lineal, or cultural ties to, cultural and historical property knowledge of and/or concerns for, and cultural or religious attachment to the proposed project area are requested to contact the HDOT. Other individuals and organizations with demonstrated legal, economic, or historic preservation interest in the undertaking are asked to share information you may have on historical and cultural sites that you may have knowledge of within the project area.
