Cultural Impact Assessment Notice: Waikīkī Aquarium Water System Upgrade
Pacific Consulting Services, Inc., on behalf of the University of Hawaiʻi is conducting a Cultural Impact Assessment (CIA) for a proposed project to upgrade the water system at the Waikīkī Aquarium located at 2777 Kalākaua Avenue in Waikīkī Ahupuaʻa, Honolulu (Kona) District, Oʻahu (TMK: (1) 3-1-031:006). The proposed project is intended to upgrade the water disposal system so that all Aquarium effluent is disposed of into two on-site injection wells, thereby eliminating direct discharge into the ocean and the City and County of Honolulu (CCH) wastewater system. The CIA team is seeking to engage with cultural practitioners and other interested parties with knowledge of the area around the Aquarium who can advance our understanding of historic properties, as well as cultural, traditional, and customary practices. The CIA is being compiled in accordance with Hawaiʻi Revised Statutes (HRS) 343, which provides regulatory oversight for environmental reviews, and will be included in the Draft Environmental Assessment for the project. Burial Notice: Waikīkī Ahupuaʻa
NOTICE TO INTERESTED PARTIES IS HEREBY GIVEN that human skeletal remains were identified by Cultural Surveys Hawaiʻi, Inc. during an archaeological inventory survey for the Ala Moana Boulevard Tower Project, Hilton Hawaiian Village, Waikīkī Ahupuaʻa, Honolulu (Kona) District, Oʻahu, TMKs: [1] 2-6-009:004–006 and portions of 007, 009, and 013.
Per Hawaiʻi Revised Statutes (HRS) Section 6E-43 and Hawaiʻi Administrative Rules (HAR) Chapter 13-300, these remains are considered previously identified. Based on the context, they are over 50 years old and reasonably believed to be Native Hawaiian. They are located in Kālia ʻIli, within Land Commission Award (LCA) 1775:1 to Paoa.

The project proponents currently envision relocation of these previously disturbed remains to a suitable preserve area; however, a burial treatment decision (preservation in place or relocation) will be made based on consultation with Native Hawaiian descendants, the Hawaiʻi State Historic Preservation Division (SHPD), and the Oʻahu Island Burial Council, per the requirements of HAR Section 13-300-33.

Burial Notice: Honolulu (Kona) District
NOTICE TO INTERESTED PARTIES IS HEREBY GIVEN that a burial site and partially exposed adult human cranium, designated as State Inventory of Historic Places (SIHP) 50-80-14-09148 was identified by Pacific Legacy, Inc. during the course of an archaeological inventory survey related to the Blaisdell Redevelopment Parking Area and Trash Compactor Facility Improvements Project, Honolulu Ahupuaʻa, Honolulu (Kona) District, Oʻahu, TMK: [1] 2-3-008:001, 002, and 003.
Following the procedures of the Hawaiʻi Revised Statutes (HRS) Chapter 6E-43, and Hawaiʻi Administrative Rules (HAR) Chapter 13-300, these remains are believed to be over 50 years old. Based on the context of the finds, they are most likely Native Hawaiian.
The project area is located within the ʻili of Kewalo. Background research indicates that during the Māhele, the portion of Kewalo in which the project area is located, known as Kewalo kai, was awarded to Kamakeʻe and Iona Pi‘ikoi through Land Commission Award (LCA) 10605 (Royal Patent 5715). The closest kuleana (maka‘āinana) LCA award to the burial site is LCA 200, awarded to Kaina and located partially within the western portion of the project area. The landowner has proposed preservation in place for SIHP 50-80-14-09148; however, the decision to preserve in place or relocate these previously identified human remains shall be made by the Oʻahu Island Burial Council in consultation with the State Historic Preservation Division (SHPD) and any recognized lineal and/or cultural descendants, per the requirements of HAR Chapter 13-300-33. Appropriate treatment shall occur in accordance with HAR Chapter 13-300-38.

All interested parties shall respond within thirty (30) days of this notice and file descendancy claim forms and/or provide information to the SHPD adequately demonstrating lineal descent from these designated burials or cultural descent from ancestors buried in the same ahupuaʻa or district.
