A recent book, Waiwai: Water and the Future of Hawaiʻi, edited by Kamanamaikalani Beamer, Ph.D., was recently published by the University of Hawaiʻi Press.

A groundbreaking book exploring water in Hawaiʻi and bridging ancestral knowledge with current challenges, this edited book brings together community members, cultural activists, academics, scientists, and policymakers. It also investigates environmental responsibility in the case of the U.S. Navy’s Red Hill Bulk Fuel Storage Facility on Kapūkakī. Contributors also include Pua Souza, Kawena Elkington, Ikaila Lowe, Kapua Sproat, Mahina Tuteur, William Tam, Thomas W. Giambelluca, Chip Fletcher, Wayne Chung Tanaka, Sharde Freitas, T. Kaʻeo Duarte, Ayron Straugh, and the Oʻahu Board of Water Supply.

This new book will provide readers with critical knowledge of the current status of water in Hawaiʻi and the goal to catalyze action. The central question contributors aim to answer is: “What do people need to know about the future of water in Hawaiʻi, and what can they do to enable a better future?”. Each chapter provides a guide to community members, academics, scientists, policymakers, and aspiring visionaries to redirect the course of water management toward sustainability for future generations.
