Burial Notice: Hāna
Human skeletal remains were found at TMK: (2) 1-4-006:014 in Kawaipapa Ahupuaʻa, Hāna District, on Maui. Land Grant awardees for this property include the families of Kahananui, Kaioiole, Maui, and Kahunaaiole. The remains are more than 50 years old and are thought to be of Hawaiian or part-Hawaiian ancestry. They will be preserved in place.

Notice Of Consultation Section 106 Of The National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA) Kaiāulu O Kapiʻolani Housing Project Hilo, Kūkūau 1St Ahupuaʻa, South Hilo District, Island Of Hawaiʻi Tax Map Key: (3) 2-4-025:048, 053 And 080
The County of Hawaiʻi Office of Housing and Community Development (OHCD) and A0705, LP anticipate receiving federal funds from the Department of Housing and Urban Development for a proposed housing project on 5.05 acres of undeveloped land [Tax Map Key (TMK): (3) 2-4-025:048, 053 and 080] located between Kapiʻolani and Kūkūau Street, in Kūkūau 1st Ahupuaʻa, Hilo, South Hilo District, Island of Hawaiʻi. The proposed housing project is subject to Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act.
In response to housing needs, OHCD and A0705, LP are proposing to build a 64-unit low-income housing development. The development will include nine residential buildings containing 32 two-bedroom units, 24 three-bedroom units, and 8 four-bedroom units, and a community center and 117-stall parking lot. The Area of Potential Effect (APE) is TMK: (3) 2-4-025:048, 053 and 080 and is 5.05 acres. The APE is approximately 700 feet southwest of the intersection of Kapiʻolani and Kūkūau Street. The APE is undeveloped land within a built environment that includes homes and roads.
We welcome any information you can provide concerning historic properties, cultural sites or history of the project APE lands. If you know individuals or organizations that have knowledge of the proposed APE, or any descendants with ancestral, lineal or cultural ties to or knowledge of historic properties or past cultural practices associated with the lands of the proposed APE, we would appreciate receiving their contact information. The project is for the suppression of non-native mosquito populations to reduce transmission of Avian Malaria to threatened and endangered forest birds on Maui. Potential areas where the project would occur include Western Waikamoi, Hanawī, and Kīpahulu (priority areas); and Western Waikamoi, and Manawainui (second tier priority areas). To improve Section 106 consultation with Native Hawaiian Organizations (NHOs), the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) and the State of Hawaiʻi Department of Transportation, Highways Division (HDOT-HWY) are inviting NHOs to participate in developing consultation protocols to facilitate communication and improve project outcomes. FHWA and HDOT are seeking information on the experience of NHOs in past Section 106 processes.
