William Charles Lunalilo
January 31

January 31, 1835 – Lunalilo was born to Chiefess Miriam Kekāuluohi and Chief Charles Kanaʻina at Pohukaina, where the grounds of ʻIolani Palace are today. In 1873, he became Hawaiʻi’s first elected king by an overwhelming majority in an unofficial popular election. A week later the Hawaiian legislature unanimously voted for him to be King of Hawaiʻi. Some speculate legislators were afraid to go against the people. He was known as “The People’s King.”
