Queen Liliʻuokalani’s Birthday

Lydia Liliʻu Loloku Walania Kamakaʻeha was born on Sept. 2, 1838, to Analea Keohokālole and Caesar Kapaʻakea at Puowaena in Honolulu, Oʻahu. Shortly after her birth, she was given to Abner Pākī and Laura Kōnia and raised with their daughter Bernice Pauahi. Her memoir, Hawaii’s Story by Hawaii’s Queen, is an autobiography. She discusses her rise to the throne, the overthrow of the monarchy in 1893, and her arrest and trial in 1895 for treason. She spent the rest of her life fighting for Native Hawaiians to regain power and autonomy over their land. She passed away in 1917 at the age of 79.
