A celebration held at ʻĀinahau, the Waikīkī home of her parents Princess Miriam Likelike and Archibald Scott Cleghorn, for Princess Kaʻiulani’s 11th birthday was recorded in the Oct. 18, 1886 issue of the Honolulu paper, The Daily Herald. The article documented the festivities, distinguished guests and the wonderful gifts given to the princess. King Kalākaua, her uncle and the older brother of her mother was present, and the article reported that he made a toast “to the health of the little princess, she being the representative of the present royal line of descent. He hoped she would receive a liberal education and training to fit herself for the high position which she would be called upon at some future time to hold.” His gift to her was $50 in gold and two 12-foot-tall feather kahili standards made with kauila wood. Her mother, Princess Likelike, also gifted her two kahili of peacock feathers.
