Nov. 16, 1836 – David Kalākaua was born to Caesar Kapaʻakea and Analea Keohokālole in a hale pili at the base of Punchbowl in Honolulu, Oʻahu. On the day he was born, canons were fired signaling the forced signing of a “treaty” between Kamehameha III and a British Naval captain. His name, Kalākaua (day of battle), records this event as a conflict rather than agreement. Kalākaua became king after Lunalilo, reigning from 1874 to 1891.
