Kalani Akana, Ph.D., is a kumu of hula, oli and ʻōlelo Hawaiʻi. He has authored numerous articles on hei (Hawaiian string figures) and indigenous ways of knowing and doing and was invited to speak at a Presidential Session of the Indigenous Peoples of the Pacific SIG at the American Education Research Association in April 2017. In 2000, he co-organized and led the Hawaiian delegation to the Festival of Pacific Arts in New Caledonia.
